Material and volumetric contrast, along with a strong connection to the landscape, are the key themes around which the project of Haus K revolves. The house is located in Varna, a village in the hills just above Brixen, in an ideal site for the needs of a young and growing family. A large lawn and a splendid view of the valley and its apple orchards immediately inspired the desire for a strong connection to the outside, while simultaneously aiming to maintain privacy from the neighboring houses.
Two large stone walls enclose and define the back of the house, creating the only seemingly visible point of support on which the suspended white volume floats above. In fact, the ground floor appears as a glass volume enclosed only at the back by the stone, so that the dining area on one side and the living area on the other, in addition to facing the landscape, can remain visually connected, even if effectively separate.
The suspended white volume is defined by a thick frame, which creates terraces and plays with shadows for the south-facing windows of the rooms, while only small, scattered openings appear at the back, corresponding to service and distribution areas, such as corridors and the stairwell. The stairwell develops into a double-height space right at the corner where the two perpendicular wings meet, welcoming those who enter the house into a bright and engaging space
